Bill of Sale
What do I need to do?
** If your title was signed over to you by a private party (not a dealer), you can skip this step as your title will act as a bill of sale. **
An acceptable bill of sale needs the following:
Date of sale
Vehicle purchase price
Vehicle VIN
Vehicle Year and Make/Manufacturer.
Buyer and seller’s names
Buyer and seller’s signatures
Sales tax amount (if paid)
This document does not need to be notarized.
If your Bill of Sale is from a dealer, it must ALSO have:
Dealership name and associated signature(s) from the dealer or sales agent
An itemized breakdown of all fees paid
NOTE: Carbon copies cannot be emailed to us, as they are too hard for the DMV to read once printed out. It must be mailed OR you can request a black and white copy from the dealer.
Why is this needed?
The purpose of a Bill of Sale is to protect all parties by acting as a receipt for the transaction and providing additional details when needed.
