Proof of Sales Tax Paid

If you just need to pay the tax/fees, you can click HERE to submit your payment directly through our secure online portal.

What do I need to do?

Provide proof of the taxes you have already paid to the DMV or dealership. If you purchased the vehicle from a private party, the only acceptable proof of sales tax is a DMV receipt.

If the bill of sale from the dealership lists an amount paid in sales tax, that means you paid the tax to the dealer.

If you paid taxes to a dealership:

  • The dealer must sign and notarize a form that we provided you called Verification of Tax Assessment as shown in the example above. This form must be notarized and completed in person, and cannot be signed or notarized digitally.

  • You will also need to provide an itemized Bill of Sale signed by the dealer showing the amount you paid in sales tax.

  • If you did not pay at least 4% sales tax on the total purchase price, you will owe the difference in sales tax. We will include a note on the checklist with the amount owed.

Note: The DMV may reject the Verification of Tax Assessment form if the tax amounts listed are different than your bill of sale.

If you paid taxes to the DMV:

  • If you went to the DMV yourself to pay taxes and register your vehicle, instead of having the dealership do that for you, the South Dakota DMV will require a valid receipt from a government entity/DMV office. The receipt CANNOT be from a non-government entity such as a 3rd party tag agency.

Note: If your receipt is from a non-government entity, you will need to contact your local DMV for the receipt, or contact us to see how much you will owe in sales tax.

A few additional requirements for the DMV receipt:

  • The VIN of the vehicle must be displayed

  • The receipt must contain the word “tax”

  • The tax amount paid must be clearly displayed

  • The government entity or DMV must be displayed on the document.

Why is this needed?

The DMV needs to know that taxes were paid on this vehicle.
