Montana requires that you be a resident of Montana to register your motorcycle there.

But there’s a way around this…

A Montana LLC.

We open a Montana LLC for you (Dirt Legal will be the registered agent), and since it has a Montana address, you’ll be able to register all your vehicles under that LLC (which you own).

This means you’ll meet the residency requirements without having to be a resident. For more info, check out our complete guide here.

It’ll take 1-2 weeks to get your license plates and registration, and another 1-2 weeks to receive your title.

If you want a temp tag right away, you can purchase it by selecting "Yes, please send me a temp tag" when placing your order.

To qualify, your motorcycle cannot have a lien, junk or salvage branding, or theft

You can still sell your motorcyce while it has a bonded title, although you'll need to disclose to any potential buyers that it has a bonded title. The person who purchased the bonded title will remain responsible for the surety bond until the title becomes clear.

To determine if you can transfer the title to your state, you will need to check with your local DMV to see the requirements, but in most cases it can be transferred.

Once you receive the out-of-state proof of ownership from us, you should have no problem transferring it to your state if your motorcycle is factory street legal. If it was manufactured for off-road use then you may not be able to transfer it to your state as street-legal.

Although we cannot guarantee that it will transfer, in most cases it will. It's best to check with your local DMV to see what they would require for an out-of-state title transfer.

Your LLC will need to be renewed yearly which is $125 a year and $150 for one-time renewals. You can have us handle this for you automatically so you don’t have to worry about staying on top of registrations every year.

Once your Montana LLC is set up you can continue to add vehicles to that same LLC. All you need to do is select "Yes" that you have an existing Montana LLC when you place your order and you’ll save up to $300.

If you already had Dirt Legal create an LLC for you and you would like to add another vehicle to that existing LLC, select “Yes, Dirt Legal has already set up an LLC for me” above.

In that case, we can set up your Montana LLC first here. Then once the motocyce is purchased, you can add it to your LLC by selecting “Yes, I already have a Montana LLC” on this page above.

We will email you a form to select your plate options after placing your order. Custom plates take up to 8 weeks, however, you will receive a temp tag once the DMV processes your order.

You can also order a temp tag sooner by selecting “Add 40-day temp tag” above – it’ll come in up to 3 business days. If your temp tag expires before you receive your custom plates, we’ll send you a new one.

Instead of waiting the usual 2-3 weeks before you can start riding, we’ll email you a 40-day temp tag within 3 business days. You can print it and use it to start riding right away!

Unless you plan on using the LLC to make money, you won't need to worry about filing a tax return for the LLC. You also won't need an EIN.

The plate you get is permanent and does NOT have to be renewed. The only additional cost is the yearly fee to keep your Montana LLC current. The cost is $125 per year ($150 for one-time renewal) and you can register for automatic renewal once your order is complete. There are no hidden fees or costs to get your off-roader registered!
