What’s a bonded title?

A bonded title is an insurance document we pay for which protects the DMV from liability in case the actual titled owner comes forward. 

The bond company will pay out the value of the bond to a person that can prove ownership of the vessel, then the bond company turns to our customer to pay them back for the value of the bond (although we’ve never seen it happen before).

 

The bond value is based on the purchase price or NADA clean retail value, whichever is higher. 

That’s why our price is different based on the vessel’s value.

If your vessel has a purchase price or NADA clean retail value above $30,000 you will have to contact us for a custom price quote. (This requires a 'soft-pull' credit check, but will not affect your credit score.)

After 3 years, the “bonded” branding will be removed from the title and your title will be considered “clean.”

“How can I get an out-of-state title and registration without being a resident?”

Simple.

We set up a Montana LLC1 so you can meet their residency requirements. Then, we title your vessel under your LLC with a Montana title.

And you won’t have to pay any taxes or file a tax return on your LLC as it will be classified as an asset-holding LLC!

Once you receive the out-of-state proof of ownership from us, you should have no problem transferring it to your state.

We cannot guarantee that it will transfer though, but in most cases, it will. It's best to check with your local DMV to see what they would require for an out-of-state title transfer.

  • Montana requires that you be a resident of Montana to register your vessel there.

    But there’s a way around this…

    A Montana LLC.

    We open a Montana LLC for you (Dirt Legal will be the registered agent), and since it has a Montana address, you’ll be able to register all your vehicles or vessels under that LLC (which you own).

    This means you’ll meet the residency requirements without having to be a resident. For more info, check out our complete guide here.

  • It’ll take 1-2 weeks to get your license plates and registration, and another 1-2 weeks to receive your title.

    If you want a temp tag right away, you can purchase it by selecting "Yes, please send me a temp tag" when placing your order.

  • You can still sell your vessel while it has a bonded title, although you'll need to disclose to any potential buyers that the vessel has a bonded title. The person who purchased the bonded title will remain responsible for the surety bond until the title becomes clear.

    To determine if you can transfer the title to your state, you will need to check with your local DMV to see the requirements, but in most cases it can be transferred.

  • Once you receive the out-of-state proof of ownership from us, you should have no problem transferring it to your state if your vehicle is factory street legal. If it was manufactured for off-road use then you may not be able to transfer it to your state as street legal.

    We cannot guarantee that it will transfer though, but in most cases, it will. It's best to check with your local DMV to see what they would require for an out-of-state title transfer.

  • Your LLC will need to be renewed yearly which is $125 a year for our auto-renewal option, and $150 for our one-time renewal. You can have us handle this for you automatically so you don’t have to worry about staying on top of registrations every year.

     The renewal also includes our registered agent service, which is required to keep your LLC current in Montana

  • Once your Montana LLC is set up you can continue to add vessels or vehicles to that same LLC. All you need to do is select "Yes" that you have an existing Montana LLC when you place your order and you’ll save up to $300.

  • If you already had Dirt Legal create an LLC for you and you would like to add another vessel to that existing LLC, select “Yes, Dirt Legal has already set up an LLC for me” when you add to cart.

  • In that case, we can set up your Montana LLC first here. Then once the vessel; is purchased, you can add it to your LLC by selecting “Yes, I already have a Montana LLC” when adding to cart.

  • Unless you plan on using the LLC to make money, you won't need to worry about filing a tax return for the LLC. You also won't need an EIN.

  • The registration you get is permanent and does NOT have to be renewed. The only additional cost is the yearly fee to keep your Montana LLC current. The cost is $125 per year ($150 for a one-time renewal) and you can register for automatic renewal once your order is complete. There are no hidden fees or costs to get your off-roader registered!

Insurance Recommendations

You’ll have to get your vessel insured before you can take it out on the water, but we won’t need proof to register it. To insure your vessel, you’ll want a policy from your state, and you will simply add the LLC as an additional interest for no extra cost.

LLC Renewal

Your LLC will need to be renewed yearly which is $125 a year for our auto-renewal option, and $150 for our one-time renewal. Please note that if your LLC is created after April 15th, it will need to be renewed by April 15th the next year, even if it was setup at the end of the year.
