A growing scam is plaguing drivers in Las Vegas and Miami-Dade, where con artists are charging up to $250 for DMV appointments that should be free, CBS News said.
Lawmakers are now taking action to shut down these operations and penalize those responsible.
In Miami-Dade, officials have uncovered a network of appointment scalpers, with driving schools at the center of the scheme, according to WSVN.
While the practice isn’t currently illegal, county leaders are pushing to make it a civil offense with $500 fines. The county has also warned that any appointments obtained through system abuse will be rejected, CBS News said.
Meanwhile, Nevada lawmakers are pushing Bill 169, modeled after a similar law in New York, to regulate third-party appointment booking, Yahoo News said.
“Paolo David, the Public Information officer for Nevada DMV said the agency will not try to message you to book an appointment and you don’t have to pay to schedule an appointment. He said many services can also be completed online at their official website,” Yahoo News said.
If passed, it would require written permission for third-party reservations, classify violations as Deceptive Trade Practices, and impose civil penalties and fines.
With fraudulent DMV appointments becoming a widespread issue, both states are moving fast to close legal loopholes and protect consumers.
