Photo of Vehicle's VIN

What do I need to do?

We need one photo of the vehicle’s VIN on the vehicle itself, on the dashboard for a car/truck or the frame for a motorcycle. If you don’t have a VIN on the dashboard, you can use take a photo of the VIN wherever it is located. The photo must be of the vehicle you are registering.

  • Make sure the photo is clear

  • Make sure the VIN is legible

  • Make sure nothing is cropped out

Examples of VINs:

BAD VIN — This is illegible and rejected by the DMV

GOOD VIN — Classic car didn’t have VIN on dash, this frame VIN/serial number is clearly legible

Why is this needed?

The DMV needs a photo of the vehicle’s VIN to visually confirm the vehicle’s identity and further limit their liability.
