But first…
Before you order, here are some technicalities you’ll want to know about:
You cannot be financing your vehicle to use this service
You’ll be getting a Montana plate/title for your OHV, and an LLC with a Montana address.
You don't have to be a resident of Montana to get an LLC or registration there.
We set up your LLC for you, and Dirt Legal will be the registered agent, which means you still meet the residency requirements without having to be a resident.
“How can I get an out-of-state registration without being a resident?”
Simple.
Montana allows you to register from anywhere, but only if you’re a resident of Montana. When we set up your Montana LLC, we register your vehicle using your LLC as the owner instead of you. The LLC meets Montana’s residency requirement, and because the LLC is a resident of Montana, and you own the LLC, you can drive in other states with out-of-state plates.
And you won’t have to pay any taxes or file a tax return on your LLC as it will be classified as an asset-holding LLC!
Your plate will also be permanent so there is no need to renew it.
(Please note that your plate will be motorcycle-sized, not car sized.)

Once we receive your documents, here’s the time frame you can expect:
4-6 weeks to get your license plate and registration. Your title will arrive 6-8 weeks later
As of February 2024, orders are taking up to 6 weeks due to the DMV being short-staffed, so we are providing a free 40-day temp tag shortly after sending your documents to the DMV for processing.
If you want a temp tag right away, you can purchase it by selecting "Yes, please send me a temp tag" when placing your order.
For us to register your vehicle, we require one of the following:
A valid title in your name
A title that has been signed over to you
If the title was issued in Kentucky, Louisiana, Montana, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, or Pennsylvania, ensure that the seller has had the title notarized before sending it to us
A Manufacturer's Certificate of Origin (MCO) from the dealership where you purchased the vehicle, accompanied by a bill of sale
A bill of sale only if that’s all you have
Additionally, the title must not be labeled as 'junk' or 'salvage'. Rebuilt is okay.
Insurance Recommendations
Of course, you’ll have to get your off-road vehicle insured for road use before you can drive it, however, we won’t need proof of insurance.
LLC Renewal
You will need to renew your LLC by April 15th each year for $125, which we can handle for you here. Please note that if your LLC is created after April 15th, it will need to be renewed by April 15th the next year, even if it was setup at the end of the year.
Frequently Asked Questions about Montana LLCs

The LLC is classified as an ASSET HOLDING LLC, not a REVENUE GENERATING LLC, therefore, no taxes will have to be filed.

You will want to get a policy in your name and your state with the LLC added as an additional interest. It will not be a commercial policy.

Once your Montana LLC is it set you can continue to add vehicles to that same LLC. All you need to do is select "Yes" that you have an existing Montana LLC with Dirt Legal when you place your order here. The cost will be the regular price minus $300.

Parts You’ll Need
You’ll need to confirm the following parts are installed on your vehicle before driving it on the roads:
White headlights with low and high beam
Red tail lights with brighter or separate brake light
Reflectors: yellow front and rear
White license plate light
Front and rear turn signals
DOT tires
Mirrors
Horn
Quiet exhaust with muffler
Spark arrestor (if you plan to use trails, OHV areas, etc.)
UTVs also need:
Seat belts
Handbrake
Rollover protection
Windshield and wipers
You DO NOT need these parts installed for us to get started and no inspection is needed.
(You will, however, need these parts installed prior to driving so you don’t get a ticket).

After you add a 40-day temp tag to your order, it will be emailed to you within 2-4 business days so that you can start driving right away while we work on registering your vehicle with the DMV.
All you’ll need to do is print and laminate the tag, attach to your vehicle, and you’re ready to ride.

Personalized Plate
When you add a personalized plate to your order, we’ll automatically email an online form to complete so you can customize the characters on your license plate.
Once your order is processed by the DMV, you'll receive a 40-day temp tag until your custom plate arrives.
You can choose a total of 6 characters, consisting of letters and numbers.

Just because you have a plate doesn’t mean you’ll have 0 risks riding in your town — unfortunately, the laws just aren't that clear.
You may still get pulled over.
That being said, getting hassled is still RARE. Some cops have just never seen an off-road vehicle driving with a plate. Usually, if you explain the statutes and how you got registered, they’ll let you go.
All we're saying is, take these risks into account before you get started. If getting pulled over scares you, stick to the trails. Getting street-legal isn’t for you.
