What do I need to do?

This form must be witnessed by a notary. That means it either needs to be notarized online or in person. Let’s look at those options now.

Notarized in person: Sign the form in front of the notary so they can notarize your signature. In some states like California, the notary may include a separate form called a Jurat as shown here. If they do, we need the Jurat as well.

Notarized online: This form can be completed virtually in front of a notary. If you notarize online, we will need a copy of the Verification Form.

What does this do?

A Power of Attorney is a legal document that grants limited rights to perform actions on behalf of a user. In our case, your POA allows us to handle paperwork related to your vehicle on your behalf. The POA is not used for anything outside the scope of your order.

If your checklist says this form can be notarized online, see THIS page for more info. If your checklist does not say that, the notarization must happen in person.

How do I deliver this to Dirt Legal?

The completed POA can be sent to us digitally. It does not have to be mailed.

We will cover sending your documents in a later step. For now, once this is complete, just set it in the Send Pile.

Required in the following situations:

  • Vehicles 1996 and newer with a non-17 digit VIN

  • Vehicles 14 years old or less that are using our 2009+ Titling service which provides a Montana Bonded Title

The inspecting officer must write the year, make, model, color, VIN, mileage (If applicable), and explain where the VIN is located. They must also sign the form, list their name, the current date, badge number, and department name.

If your vehicle is now paid off and previously had a lien and the lien is still listed on your Title/MCO (Certificate of Origin), then we will need a lien release from the lienholder so we can remove the lien from the vehicle.

If you are still financing your vehicle, we will not need a lien release. This document will be listed on the checklist if we need it.

Must include the following items:

  • Dealership name

  • Dealership reps signature

  • Buyer name

  • Purchase date

  • Purchase price with itemized breakdown of all fees

  • Vehicle VIN

  • Sales Tax (If paid)

  • If there is a trade-in, the VIN of the traded-in vehicle must be listed

We can accept this document digitally. Make sure the dealer signed it. If you are in California, we can accept a retail installment contract.

If your bill of sale is a carbon copy, it may be hard to read when scanning it, you can either verify it closely after scanning or if it doesn’t scan legibly, mail it to us or get a legible copy sent to you from the dealership.

If your checklist says this form can be notarized online, you can do so using a site like notarize.com. If we are registering your vehicle in Montana and you notarize this form online, include the verification form shown above which you can find with the following steps if you used Notarize.com

  1. Go to notarize.com and login

  2. Go to "Your documents"

  3. Click "Completed" > "View" on the right side > "Document"

  4. Hover on the bottom right-hand side of the doc and click the green download button

The SF-97 form (Standard Form 97) also referred to as United States Government Certificate to Obtain a Title to a Vehicle form, is a proof of ownership document for military/government vehicles.

This document should come with a reassignment of SF-97 form, which is usually from Ironplanet which is a government auction website. This reassignment form reassigns to SF-97 to you or the person that you bought the vehicle from. We then reassign it to you or your LLC so we can register your vehicle.

The South Dakota Motor Vehicle Affidavit is used for when your name appears slightly different across each document provided, such as a driver’s license, title, Social, and bill of sale. For example, if your middle initial is on one document, but your entire middle name is listed on another document, this form is needed. Simply sign this form if we sent it to you.

This form must be signed in ink on the bottom right. It CANNOT be signed electronically, however, it can be sent to us digitally.

This document/photo is usually only needed for trailers and RV’s being registered in South Dakota. Unladen Vehicle Weight (UVW) is also referred to as the dry weight or shipping weight. This IS NOT the same as GVWR

This information is generally affixed to the trailer/RV on a plaque or sticker, in your owner’s manual, on the MCO (Certificate of origin), or we can accept a letter from the manufacturer listing the weight.

If you cannot find this info, it’s best to contact the dealer or manufacturer for a picture of the MCO. We can assist with this if needed.

If you are financing your vehicle and don’t have the title in your possession, we will need your lienholder account number so we can obtain your title from your DMV so we can register your vehicle.

If you have a Title, MCO, or other ownership document that is physically available, it must be mailed to us so we can register your vehicle.

You can write this number on the Power of Attorney form.

This document must include the following items:

  • Vehicle VIN and/or title number

  • Must show the amount of tax collected

  • Must be from a government entity (not a tag agency/3rd party DMV)

If you paid tax to a non-government entity, you will need to contact your state DMV for proof of tax. If you are in Florida, we can handle this for you.

If you cannot obtain sufficient proof of tax, you can pay the sales tax again. Contact us if you have any issues with obtaining proof of tax.

This form gives you credit for taxes already paid. It needs to be completed and signed by the dealer. It can be emailed to the dealer or completed in person, you DO NOT have to drive to your dealership. We can contact your dealer to get this form completed if needed, however, your order may be delayed while we get in contact with your dealership.
